Kata - Kanku Dai

English - Viewing the sky; Large

Kanku Dai is the major form of the two katas which evolved from the kata Kushanku. With 65 moves, it is the longest kata in Shotokan karate, and was said to be the favourite kata of Sensei Funakoshi. It also appears in other styles, going by its old name of Kunshaku. It was the major kata from which Sensei Itosu drew when creating the Heian katas, and as such is another kata which karateka should study diligently.

Just like Bassai Dai, this kata requires large and powerful moves. The two opening shuto-ukes to either side should be performed at head height with the foream vertical and the elbow bent at 90 degrees.
